Tips When Driving in Summer
Heatwaves and extended periods of hot sunny weather can be somewhat of a rarity in the UK, but we still need to be adequately prepared for when those glorious few months of sunshine roll around.
Summer temperatures can affect both the driver and vehicle and pose significant risks and challenges. We have compiled useful tips to make sure you’re always safe and comfortable whilst on the road.
Engine Fluid – Warm weather can put a lot of strain on car engines. Before undertaking a journey, make sure to check your cooling system, engine oil, and brake fluid are all at the recommended levels.
Windscreen – It’s essential to have a clean and clear windscreen on hot days. The sun can reflect off dirt and scratches. Make sure your windscreen wash is filled up to prevent smearing.
Battery – When it comes to driving in hot weather, make sure you get your battery checked to make sure it has not leaked or cracked and ensure it is firmly mounted and safe from vibration. In summer the rate of evaporation of the electrolyte liquid inside the battery increases.
Tyre Pressure – It’s essential to monitor your tyre pressures during the summer months because both under and overinflation can cause problems. Under-inflated tyres flex more, which causes heat build-up. After a period of hot, dry weather, rain can make roads slippery and uneven tyre pressure can increase the chances of loss of control.
Air Conditioning System – It’s important to carry out regular checks to ensure everything is working efficiently when the temperatures outside start to increase.
Summer months can cause drowsiness, dehydration and exhaustion for the driver. For emergencies make sure you always carry the following:
- Snacks and water
- Sun cream
- First aid kit
- Phone charger or portable battery pack
- Jump leads
- A warning triangle
- Hi-vis and warm jackets
